Training Institution Recognition Application

Dear Colleague:

Effective February 1st, 2004, all programs applying for recognition by TESL Ontario must have been training Adult ESL instructors for at least a year before applying.

Attached is the information on application procedures and criteria for TESL Ontario's TESL Training Program Recognition. The application deadlines are February 1st, June 1st and October 1st in any given year. Eight copies of applications and all supporting material must be submitted to the TESL Ontario office.

TESL Ontario Institution Recognition Standards may be different from those required either by TESL Canada or other provinces. If your school is in Ontario and you want your TESL program to be recognized by TESL Ontario, follow the TESL Ontario requirements. Effective February 1st, 2004, all programs applying for recognition by TESL Ontario must have been training ESL instructors for at least a year prior to the application date. If a recognized program sets up a program in a new location, this is considered to be a new program; it must be in existence for a year and then apply for recognition, meeting the criteria currently in place at that time. To date, TESL Ontario has not recognized any classroom-based courses outside Ontario. TESL Ontario will not be recognizing any courses delivered outside Canada.

In general, all members of the TESL Training Institution Recognition Committee will review the applications. A member who may have a real or perceived conflict of interest in an application shall not be assigned to the application. TESL Ontario reserves the right to arrange onsite visits and evaluations of any program applying for TESL Ontario recognition.

It is your responsibility to ensure that the information you submit is complete and clearly referenced to the application form and program standards. A chart of program standards is included for this purpose. Should there be any questions regarding your application, please contact TESL Ontario.

The fee for processing the application, the decision and the report is $200.00. All approved programs are promoted by TESL Ontario as TESL Training Programs meeting the Association's standards; for example, in Contact, the association newsletter; a listing on TESL Ontario's web site; and information disseminated from the TESL Ontario office.

Written decisions should be forwarded to applicants within two months following the application deadline. Should the decision be negative, procedures for appealing the decision and/or making the necessary changes to the program in order to apply again will be outlined in the individual decisions. All information received will be kept confidential.

TESL Ontario's recognition of a TESL training program will be for a period of one year after the recognition date, after which continued TESL Ontario recognition will be contingent on the recognized institution submitting annual reports. TESL Ontario reserves the right to arrange third party onsite visits and evaluations of any TESL Ontario recognized TESL training program.

It should be reiterated that the TESL Training Institution Recognition Committee cannot be expected to make connections between Program Standards and application material submitted if there are not page numbers which are clearly referenced to the program requirements. Please be certain that your application is complete.

Once a private school is recognized as meeting TESL Ontario standards, the school will receive a letter requesting the private school provide an authorized copy of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities registration certificate, including the registration number for the program. This registration information must be provided before the Committee can forward the Certificate, recommend the program and add the program to the web site.

Please note that the Committee will do a first review and may ask for clarification or additional information to be able to continue with consideration of the application; upon the receipt of the requested information, the second and final decision on the application will be made. The TESL training program applicant will have the right to appeal the decision to the Appeals Committee for an additional fee, or may submit a new application at a future date.

Thank you for your interest in TESL Ontario's TESL Training Institution Recognition Standards.

Should you have any questions about the application or the recognition procedure, please contact the TESL Ontario office.

Please mail eight copies (8) of the application, attached information and the fee of $200 by registered mail to:
