1. Original or authorized copies of (a) your degree(s) OR (b) transcript(s) of completed university degree(s) indicating that the degree was conferred. If your university degree was granted from an institution
outside Canada, it must be equivalent to an undergraduate degree in Ontario. This must be officially determined through one
of the equivalency offices at either the University of Toronto,
World Education Services or the International Credential Assessment Service
of Canada in Guelph and the original or authorized copy of the equivalency
results submitted with your application. It is not necessary to submit your international degree.
Please note: if the names on your documents are different, please provide proof of the name change.
2. An original or authorized copy of your certificate or transcript showing successful completion of 250 hours of required TESL course work from a program recognized by TESL Ontario as meeting its standards. The transcript must indicate that the certificate was completed or granted.
(see Section C of the application package for required course content);
3. If it is deemed that you have significant TESL training from other than one of the programs listed on the TESL Ontario website as meeting its standards, include an official translation of your transcript(s). An applicant with extensive second language education and experience will be referred for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR), if all other requirements for TESL Ontario certification are met. The fee for the PLAR adjudication of the applicant's portfolio is $295 dollars, which would be submitted with your PLAR application.
4. Documentation from the Program Practicum Supervisor or mentoring instructors which describes in detail the nature of the teaching practicum and its duration. The teaching practicum must be a minimum of 50 hours in adult ESL classrooms. In the case of some TESL Ontario recognized programs, it is the students’ responsibility to keep this record and provide the qualitative and quantitative detail of the different class levels observed and taught. (See Section E of the application form)
5. If your first language is NOT English please refer to the Proficiency in English Requirements (Section D of the application package) and include the required original or authorized documents with your application.
6. Enclose completed Certification Application form and Application Fee: $32.00
7. An applicant must be a member of TESL Ontario, or make application on the Membership Application form at time of application.
8. Enclose a non-refundable cheque or money order made out to TESL Ontario with the application form(s)and documentation, and send by mail. We also accept visa card payment. Please send by registered mail if submitting originals and include a registered mail envelope for the return of your original documents. If you deliver originals by hand for copying, this may be done from Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.:

Two members of the Certification Review Board, which consists of three ESL professionals appointed by the TESL Ontario Executive following an application process, will review each application. Should there be disagreement, the third member will consider the application. Any candidate who has her/his certification denied, has the right to appeal the decision to the Appeals Committee within a specified time after that decision.
