2013 Award Recipients

Anne MacGregor-O'NeillAnne MacGregor-O’Neill is an ESL instructor and has worked for the TCDSB for over 20 years. In that time she has taught a variety of levels from literacy to CLB 6. She has also taught ESL for Pregnant Women at Access Alliance Multicultural Community Health Centre in Toronto and a customer service program for newcomers.

Anne sat on the TESL Toronto executive board for seven years. During her time on the board she served on a variety of committees and was the treasurer for two years. She has presented at both the TESL Toronto and the TESL Ontario conferences. Anne co-authored a book on field trips in Toronto and developed curriculum for a medical terminology course.  more...

 

 

Marg HeidebrechtMarg Heidebrecht was initially drawn to the field of TESL because of its captivating combination of people and language. With a background in elementary education and a houseful of children and pets, her 1991 shift to adult learners provided a welcome challenge.

Her career began at Mohawk College. She taught 4 days a week, a different level each day, a professional jumping-in-the-deep-end approach which gave her a lot of experience, and some panic, in a short period of time. The college soon formed a partnership with other Hamilton service providers and Marg was hired to teach in a pilot program designed to serve clients who had left violence and trauma before immigrating to Canada. In that setting she learned to work in multi-level classes, welcome and train volunteers, and value community connections.  more...
