ABOUT TESL ONTARIO
TESL Ontario provides support and direction to professionals, government bodies and learners involved in English as a Second Language in Ontario.
TESL Ontario was established in 1972 as an independent not for profit association serving the professional development needs of English language educators in Ontario. TESL Ontario serves 4,600 members and consists of a provincial office located in Toronto and 12 affiliate chapters throughout the Province. TESL Ontario is governed by a nine-person board of directors.
TESL Ontario provides an accreditation system for educators working in the adult language training field and a recognition program for TESL training institutions in Ontario. The association is financially supported by membership fees, a portion of which it distributes to the affiliate chapters for local professional development activities.

The position of Executive Director is a full-time staff position. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director contributes to the overall success of TESL Ontario and its goals and objectives by providing leadership in the overall management, administration and operations of TESL Ontario.
The Executive Director is an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board of Directors, and is expected to provide timely and appropriate support to the Board of Directors and to ensure that the organization fulfills all of its legal and ethical obligations.
Board Support and Governance
- Communicate with the Board of Directors on an ongoing basis in a concise, clear and comprehensive manner, to ensure that the Board of Directors has adequate information on TESL Ontario activities and issues to assure effective decision-making in its governance role
- Participate in all Board Meetings, Working Committee Meetings and the yearly AGM
- Assist the Board of Directors in facilitating the successful development and implementation of the Strategic Plan
- Recommend and develop relevant organizational policies to the Board of Directors, and report on implementation and procedures on an ongoing basis
- Have comprehensive knowledge of the Board’s specific governance policies and the organization’s bylaws and provide ongoing policy advice to the Board of Directors
Strategic Leadership, Operational Management and Communications
- Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
- Ensure appropriate evaluation strategies in all aspects of operations
- Establish and maintain a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with legislation, regulations and established operational policies
- Ensure that all new staff receive adequate orientation to the organization, receive appropriate training when required, have current job descriptions and avail themselves of professional development opportunities in their specific operational field
- Implement a performance management process for all staff which includes monitoring the performance of staff on an ongoing basis, including regular performance reviews
- Ensure that volunteers serving the organization at all levels are properly oriented and assisted in their duties when necessary, and that they receive organizational recognition for the services they provide
- Ensure that all services developed and offered by TESL Ontario to members and others are relevant, current and helpful through soliciting regular feedback via surveys and other means
- Establish positive working collaborations with all TESL Ontario stakeholders – members, volunteers, ministries, provincial organizations and other networks in order to further the best interests of the organization and the field
- Represent the organization at all relevant meetings with stakeholders
- Serve as the spokesperson for TESL Ontario
Financial and Risk Management
The TESL Ontario Annual Conference, currently in its 48th year, a significant part of the organization’s income stream, contributes to the organization’s vision and mission and maintains its values. It also solidifies our link with Ministries who participate in the Conference and have supported that connection over the years.
Project development and management, funded by Ministries, is also a source of income for the organization, with the additional benefit of resulting in new initiatives for the entire field.
Executive Director’s role:
- Ensure ongoing management of the efficient and effective use of the organization’s resources and maintenance of an ongoing effective working relationship with external auditors
- Provide the Board of Directors with regular financial reports
- Serve as a member of the Finance Committee of the Board
- Oversee the process of all negotiation, development and application of legal contracts involving the organization, including project development contracts
- Ensure appropriate systems are in place to safeguard the physical assets of the organization and that the organization carries adequate and appropriate insurance coverage
- 8 – 10 years of progressive management and leadership experience, ideally in the non-profit sector, working closely with a Board of Directors
- Strong leadership skills with a proven record of effective organizational development
- Excellent interpersonal skills and strong ability to deal with competing priorities
- Ability to maintain and promote the unique and foundational role of the TESL Ontario members, the Board, and the TESL Ontario Affiliate Chapters
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and network with key stakeholders
- Familiarity with Funding Agreement process
- Graduate or post-graduate degree
