Language Assessor
(Full Time Salaried Contract – until March 31st, 2022)
Grade: 10
Effective: Immediately

Reports to: Site Supervisor
Location: Central Y CLARS Site

YMCA Employment and Community Programs provide a variety of employment, counselling, outreach, intervention, training and newcomer programs to youth and adults throughout the GTA. The YMCA Language Assessment and Referral Centre functions as the first step of the language training pathway for immigrants to Canada. All immigrants wishing to access language classes funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration need to undergo an assessment at the language assessment centre.

The Assessor is responsible for administering the CLB assessment tools and referring immigrants and naturalized Canadians to the most appropriate language training program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development. The Language Assessor works as a team member ensuring quality programming and service delivery, achievement of program goals and establishment and nurturing of effective working relationships within the program, the Association and the community.

Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Screens clients’ immigration status eligibility for placement in IRCC and MLTSD -funded language training.
  • Administers Canadian Language Benchmarks assessment tools according to principles outlined in the initial training and according to the YMCA, IRCC and MLTSD policies and standards.
  • Refers clients to the most appropriate language training providers based on Canadian Language Benchmarks, the national placement grid and individual client needs.
  • Re-refers clients whose needs have changed since initial assessment.
  • Provides language needs assessment information to clients.
  • Maintains accurate, up-to-date client files and documentation using a shared database.
  • Prepares and submits statistics and program reports, as required, in a timely manner.
  • Maintains regular contact with language training providers and other community partners thereby sharing program information with all stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Participates in volunteer supervision, staff meetings and professional development trainings as required.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represents the YMCA and the program in a professional manner.
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: 
  • TESL Ontario accreditation is mandatory (no exceptions)
  • Experience teaching ESL to adults (300 hrs min)
  • Knowledge of the settlement sector
  • CLB BootCamp certificate is a strong asset
  • Post-secondary education in a related field
  • Proficiency in a second language is a strong asset
  • Excellent interview and assessment skills
  • Flexibility regarding assigned work hours and locations
  • Must be able to work weekdays, evening shifts, Saturday and Sunday shifts
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively prioritize responsibilities
  • Ability to work in an efficient manner both independently and as part of a team
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Proficient with personal computer applications, e.g. Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, Internet search engines, power point, Excel, Zoom, etc.
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
